Try making up new verses adding pantomime actions to match:

The dog went, Woof!...Woof!

The pig went,  Oink....Oink.

To keep kids on the "barnyard" theme try a dinosaur and discuss why it dosn't fit. Then go ahead and make a new song with only dinosaurs.

Here is a poem written by a third grader following a theme.

FARM ANIMALS by Amber Grosse

I had a little pony named Dapple Grey,

    Dapple Grey, Dapple Grey.

I fed him lots of hay every day,

    every day, every day.

I had a little duck named Slippy, Slippy, Slippy.

He came out of the pond drippy, drippy, drippy.

I had a little cow named Sassy, Sassy, Sassy.

If you smelled his breath it would be grassy, grassy, grassy.

I had a little pig named Pete, Pete, Pete.

And all he did was eat, eat, eat.
