TITANIC

New words,  Music Legacy 2002

They built the ship Titanic to sail the ocean blue.

They thought they had a ship the water would never go through.

It was on the maiden trip when an iceberg hit that ship.

It was sad when the great ship went down.

            (CHORUS):

            It was sad. -so sad.

            It was sad. -too bad.

It was sad when the great ship went down -to the bottom of the--

Husbands and wives; little children lost their lives.

It was sad when the great ship went down. -where’s Dad?

They sailed out from England and were not to far from shore

When the rich refused to mingle with the poor.

So they put them down below where they’d be first to go.

It was sad when the great ship went down.

            (CHORUS)

That ship was full of trouble and the sides about to burst,

When somebody shouted: "Women and children first!"

It was a night none would forget, even millionaires got wet!

It was sad when the great ship went down.

            (CHORUS)

They swung the life boats out over the deep and icy sea,

When the band struck up with: "Nearer My God to Thee."

Men and children cried as water swept over the side.

It was sad when the great ship went down.

            (CHORUS)

The moral of the story, as you can plainly see,

Is: have a life preserver when you go out to sea.

Mother Nature’s hand made sure that ship would never land.

It was sad when the great ship went down.

            (CHORUS)

                Guitar: Verse, C C F C - C C D7 G7 - C C F C - C G7 C C

                Chorus, F F C C - C C G G7 - C C F F - C G7 C C

So they built another ship and they named it Mary Jane
from the bow to the stern it was built all just the same

It was sad when the great ship went down!

Ms Ester turned around just to see her husband drown
and the ship titanic gave a sinking sound
She rapped herself in mink as the ship began to sink

'cause he thought it was the food that had put 'em in the mood

Nick Allen

So they built another ship and they named it Mary Lou
And they painted her bow green and they painted her stern blue
And they christened her with beer and she sank right off the pier
It was sad when the great ship went down!

Twas the 14th of April
The fourth month of the year
The Titanic hit an iceberg
That everyone could hear
They suffered and they cried
"Good Lord don't let us die"
It was sad when the great ship went down.

Elderly lay in bed

While the healthy people fled.

A variation of the Chorus:

"Husbands and wives; itty bitty children lost their lives.

Tim Roberts sent this version commenting:

"I didn't know it existed any other way."

Uncles and Aunts, little children lost their pants it was sad when the great
ship went down

End the song with   "Kerplunk, it sunk, what junk!"

By Lisa B.

While the cooks were making pies, all the rich threw up their chives
it was sad when the great ship went down.

The version I sang at school (in England) went something like this With a slower more folky sound)

Oh they built the ship titanic to sail the ocean blue
And they thought they had a ship that the water would never go through
But the Lords Almighty hand Knew that ship would never land
It was sad when that great ship went down

Now when the captain heard the news from a sailor up the mast
He said steady boys we'd better not go to fast
But the company in their greed
said we must increase speed
It was sad when that great ship went down

  Memories fading from here on
They put the lifeboats down in the deep and raging sea
as the band on board played nearer my God than thee
Little children wept and cried
as the waves swept over the side
It was sad when that great ship went down

Anthony Jones

I know another verse to the song.

Titanic left the harbor at a rapid speed.
She was carrying everything that the people need.
She sailed six hundred miles away but met an iceberg on her way.
It was sad when that great ship went down.

There was another verse that said the captain tried to wire, but the lines were all on fire. I don't remember that one.

And another variation of the first verse:

They built the ship Titanic to sail the ocean blue
Thought they had a ship that the water couldn't leak through.
But the Lord's Almighty Hand knew that ship would never stand.
It was sad when that great ship went down.

Cats4me...

In the chorus when singing "husbands and wives, women and children lost their lives" I sang it where the group singing would split up and one half would sing "to the bottom of the sea ee ee eee" and then they would join again at "it was sad when the greatest ship went down."
-Tate Nudo

another two verses
The ship set sail from England on that North Atlantic shore,
and the rich refused to associate with the poor.
So they put the poor below where they were the first to go
It was sad when that great ship went down.

The ship was sinking slowly in the black and mighty sea
When the band struck with "Nearer my God to Thee"
The iceberg that it hit really gave that ship a fit
It was sad when that greaet ship went down.

-Smackadoodle...

At camp, we ended the song like this...kerplunk...it sunk...
what a lousy piece of junk...to the bottom of the sea...
that's the end of my story.
-Tina D

To replace "Husbands and wives; little children lost their lives. "

"Females and males, little puppies lost their tales"

I made that up years ago... when I was a kid...      Elizabeth Finn

I heard the "they built another ship" verse this way:

"Well, they built another ship, and they called it Mary Lou.
Its stern they painted red, and its bow they painted blue.
Then, they filled her up with beer, and she sank right off the pier."

After this verse, the chorus goes:

"Uncles and aunts, even little children lost their pants;
it was great when the sad ship went down/ to the bottom of the sea."

instead of

"Husbands and wives, even little children lost their lives;
it was sad when the great ship went down/ to the bottom of the sea."

-Stephanie

They made a film about it with Di Caprio and Kate
And a love song by Celine to bring it up to date
The acting is well cheesy and the singing is too wheezy
Thank heavens the ship went down.

from MossesofBlean

In Aurora at Leighton Elem we made up two changes for husbands and wives.....
Fishies and turtles old ladies lost their girdles........
Peter, John and Mark, they were eaten by a shark.......

We had a different verse to it
Well they built the ship Titanic to sail the Ocean Blue
For they thought they had a ship that the sea would nar go through
But the Good Lord raised his hand, said *That ship will never land*
It was sad when the great ship went down.
Chorus (same as most except we split it up with one saying see ee ee ea...
while others said Husbands and wives, little children lost their lives)

Well the Cal-i- forn I A not a dozen miles away
couldn't hear the SOS cuz the crew had hit the hay
Chorus
Well the moral of this story as you can plainly see
Is to wear a life preserver as you go out to sea.
Chorus!
Clare~

My grandmother taught me this song over 25 years ago....and these were the words:

They built a ship: Titanic...to sail the ocean blue

and they said that the water'd never get through

But the good lord raised his hand

and sent that ship right down

It was sad when the Great ship went down

It was sad...it was sad It was said when the great ship went down

to the bottom of the S someone would hold out the note SEA while others sang...husband wives little children lost their lives E A

It was sad when the great ship went down (Everyone singing again)

Angela Naquin

I am 46 years old and I was trying to remember the words from this song.
I used to sing it at Morgan Memorial Goodwill Camps in Athol Massachusetts.

I also remember the verse that said "The captain tried to wire, but the lines were all on fire", it was sad when the greatest ship went down.

One group would sing "OH IT WAS SAD"  The other trying to be louder  would sing "SO SAD", then once more.

Great memories.

Thanks !!!!

Jimmy from Boston.

Oh the boat began to rock

and the lights began to flicker

and the captain yelled out where the heck’s my liquor?

So they passed the bottle round and they all began to drown

it was sad when the great ship went down

Another half verse?

“Rats off the ship, the ship needs a flip,

Tables afloat, and bodies abloat,

It was sad when the great ship went down!

How dark is that ?
